World Wide Web (WWW)
and other Internet protocols
World
Wide Web or WWW protocol
We
have discussed how to write, design, and publish pages on the World Wide Web. We
start simple, with the basics. We will discuss the
following:
If
you've given some time exploring the Web, most, if not all, of this topic will
seem known to you. Next you'll find an overview of points to think about when
you design and organize your own web documents.
When
we share data across the Internet, it is not predetermined exactly how any one
part of our data goes from point A to point B. But, the TCP/IP protocol always
ensures that it does. The Internet was becoming popular before the development
of the World Wide Web, but nobody predicted the breathtaking growth of the Web,
seemingly overnight. As with any big paradigm shift in the computer industry,
this one caught many companies flat-footed, including Microsoft, and catapulted
bright young stars such as Netscape’s founders and countless other internet
millionaires onto the scene. The World Wide Web was originally developed as a
government research project at the CERN laboratories in Switzerland. The World
Wide Web is based on the Hyper-Text Transport Protocol (HTTP). This is the key
to transferring hypertext documents and data across the
Internet.
Hypertext Transport Protocol
(HTTP)
With
this protocol, a client machine will send a request to a server for a specified
document. The server then sends the document back to the client. HTTP also
supports sending data generated from server-based programs to the client. And,
the server, can take data generated from the client and pass it on to other
programs on the server for processing. This server-based processing is Carried
out through the Common Gateway Interface (CGI) or active server pages among
other methods. For example, this is how client-to-server database processing
takes place for checking Web page passwords, credit card transactions, and so
on. One other key to understanding how to access World Wide Web documents is the
use of Uniform Resource Locators (URLs). URLs are a naming convention for
finding the location of any file on the Web. Every Web page has a unique Web
address or URL.
