Hyper Text Markup
Language (HTML)
HTML
is a markup language. Writing in a markup language means that you start with the
text of your page and add special tags around words and paragraphs. The tags indicate the different parts of
the page and produce different effects in the browser. HTML has a defined set of
tags you can use. You can't make up your own tags to create new appearances or
features. Creating your own tags is allowed in newer languages like XML
(Extensible Markup Language).
The base set of
HTML tags, the lowest common denominator, is referred to as HTML 2.0. HTML 2.0
is the old standard for HTML (a written specification for it is developed and
maintained by the W3 consortium) and the set of tags that all browsers must
support. HTML 2.0 tags can be used anywhere.
HTML
3.2 is considered the "first generation" of HTML and a catchall for lots of new
features that give you flexibility over HTML 2.0 for how you design your pages.
HTML 3.2 adds some of the elements that have emerged out of the feature war
between the two leading browsers: Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet
Explorer. HTML 3.2 includes support for extensions to forms, new alignment
options for paragraphs, and support for font control, along with other new
features. Like HTML 2.0, the HTML 3.2 standard is maintained by the W3
Consortium.
Subsequently
HTML version 4.0 was released and further advancement have been made. If you're
interested in how HTML development is working and just exactly what's going on
at the W3 Consortium, check out the pages for HTML at the Consortium's site at
http://www.w3.org/
In
addition to the tags defined by the various levels of HTML, internet browser
specific extensions to HTML are also implemented by individual internet browser
companies and are proposed for inclusion in HTML 4.0. Netscape and Microsoft are
particularly responsible for creating extensions, and they offer many new
features unique to their browsers.
In
addition, although HTML 3.2 was finalized, work was already underway at the W3C
to develop the successor to HTML 3.2. This effort, code-named Cougar, proposes
many new features that have been implemented in the latest versions of Netscape
and Microsoft Internet Explorer such as games and client-side scripting.
Even
Web designers with years of experience and hundreds of pages under their belts
have to struggle with the problem of which set of tags to choose in order to
strike a balance between wide support for a design (using HTML 2.0) or having
more flexibility in layout but less consistency across
browsers.
Keeping track of all this information can be really
confusing. You may like to know which version of HTML the tag belongs to, how
widely supported it is, and how to use it to best effect in a wide variety of
browsers. You have to know how to deal with the different HTML tags to make sure
that your pages are readable and still look good in all kinds of
browsers.
